Words to Write By

“Writers don’t write from experience, though many are resistant to admit that they don’t. I want to be clear about this. If you wrote from experience, you’d get maybe one book, maybe three poems. Writers write from empathy.”

— American activist, writer, educator and commentator, Nikki Giovanni

  1. I remember when I first started telling my friends and family that I wanted to be a writer. Typical response: “You’re too young,” or “You lack life-experience.” I wish I’d had this quote to defend my decision!

I sometimes wonder how many writers of serial killer novels, having had it hammered into their heads that they need to write from experience in order to sound authentic, decided to get some first-hand experience. I hope it’s not just me!
